I do custom cakes. I especially like to do cutesy 3D kid cakes. I debated between a castle cake, a pillow with a tiara on it and a teapot cake for my daughter's Pink Princess Tea Party. I opted for the teapot because it was small and since I was already serving petit fours I didn't figure we needed a ton of cake. If we had been having a larger party I may have gone another way.
For the body of the teapot I used the small ball cake pan. I cut off a little of the ball so that it could sit on the cake pedestal. Then I used strips of parchment paper around the cake to keep the pedestal clean. I cover the teapot in frosting. Then smoothed out the surface of the ball as much as possible using a white Viva paper towel. There is no pattern on this paper towel so you can just lay it lightly on the cake and smooth over the crusted frosting. After that I formed the lid top and laid it on the frosting. Then I formed the knob and used a toothpick to put that into the top of the cake. I used dowel rods for the spout and handle of the teapot. After all of the fondant elements were on the cake I went ahead and piped on eyes like Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast (this was my son's idea) and rose buds to tie it into the rose buds that I put on the petit fours. It turned out pretty good I think. I was satisfied with it. I sprinkled the pedestal and the teapot with a little edible glitter to add a bit of sparkle.
